Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG – Spring Sipping with Oz Clarke and Tom Surgey

Exploring Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, Oz Clarke and Tom Surgey re-think Prosecco in this sparkling fourth episode of WineAlive’s Spring Sipping series.

‘Look out for Conegliano Valdobbiadene on the label and you know you will be drinking the special stuff.‘ – Oz Clarke

Think of Prosecco only as a nice easy going, fruity party pop? Oz Clarke and Tom Surgey will change your mind as they taste four single village wines from Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG – considered to be the original Prosecco area. Learn how Prosecco Superiore from the two villages of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene differs from generic Prosecco, what ‘rive’ means and see Tom explain the difference between Brut, Brut Nature and Extra Brut and watch as Oz tries (several times) to improve Tom’s pronunciation by teaching him how to say Valdobbiadene like a true Italian.

A different story: Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG

Conegliano Valdobbiadene is the original birthplace of now-famous Prosecco.  A traditional rural area an hour north of Venice, nestled between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene.

This area is characterized by breathtaking landscapes: steep hills interlaced with valleys, grassy terraces and woodland create a mosaic of natural beauty and agricultural heritage. This landscape has been shaped for centuries by wine growers. Vineyards cling to traditional grass terraces — known as ciglioni — on incredibly steep slopes. No machines can get up here, so most tasks are still performed by hand, just as generations before have always done.

The distinctive combination of generational effort and natural beauty led to the “Prosecco Hills of Conegliano Valdobbiadene”, uniquely, being recognized as a UNESCO Agricultural World Heritage Site in 2019 for its cultural and environmental importance. Conegliano Valdobbiadene is the only Prosecco denomination to be so recognised by UNESCO.
