Manchester Town Hall, The People’s Museum, Old Trafford Cricket Ground and the Manchester Cathedral have for over 12 years, all been home to our flagship northern wine festival, presented by our original trio of wine experts – Oz Clarke, Olly Smith and Tim Atkin MW – who you will undoubtedly know as the Three Wine Men.

Over the years more wine specialists joined the team, with Manchester wine expert Kate Goodman of Reserve Wines having made a guest appearance.

And, in 2025 Three Wine Men has become Wine Alive.  At Wine Alive Manchester you’ll be able to taste hundreds of sensational wines from around the world, talk to the people behind the labels and get recommendations from our expert hosts, all for the price of one ticket.

Some thoughts from our guests

Just on our way home from a brilliant night at Manchester Cathedral. Met Oz on our way round as well as going to his English wine masterclass. We’ve had a brilliant time, tasted some great new wines and learnt a lot!

Past events

Big Christmas Wine festival goers of Manchester, you did us proud in 2024! After a two year break you welcomed the return of expert hosts – Oz Clarke, Olly Smith and Tim Atkin MW – to your glorious Manchester Cathedral.

You chatted and took selfies as they willingly shared their wine knowledge to suggest bottles they thought would suit your particular palate, expertly choosing from the hundreds of wines producers, from Argentina, Champagne, Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Ukraine, had open to taste.

You sipped and swirled and asked the winemakers there about the wine style, how the wine was made and where you could buy it. You caught up with local wine merchants Carringtons (Chorlton) and Reserve (West Didsbury) and discussed learning more about wine at the Manchester Wine School.

Some of you shrewdly took up show offers for money off the favourite wines you’d discovered and had the wines delivered to you.

Manchester, we can’t wait to welcome you back!

Wine-Masterclasses

In this sellout Masterclass, Oz Clarke explained how fabulous and diverse English wine has become. Sparkling wine featured of course, with Oz choosing to share Ashling Park Estate’s stellar sparkling rosé, made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Oz then guided Manchester’s wine enthusiasts through a tasting of still wines made (from lesser-known grape varieties Pinot Noir Précoce, Bachus, Ortega and Rondo) by England’s most exciting producers; Flint Vineyards, Silverhand Estate, Folc, London Cru and Denbies.

From a calm corner of Manchester Cathedral Olly Smith took Manchester Masterclass attendees on a global fizz adventure! Tasting through six styles of sparkling wine – English Sparkling, Champagne, Cap Classique, Cava, Prosecco, and Crémant de Limoux.

Olly explained the general differences in fermentation methods, explained what effect the various grape varieties had on the taste and, as you’d expect from BBC’s Saturday Kitchen expert, what food and occasion would make these sparklers shine.

Every year Tim Atkin MW publishes the definitive Chile wine report, so who better to transport Manchester Masterclass attendees on a 35-minute Chilean wine tour.

Describing Chile’s surprising winemaking history (vines were first planted in 1493) and varied wine making regions, Tim travelled north

from the colder Austral region, up through the Central Valley and Aconagua to the desert like Atacama region.

On the journey Tim shared his recommendations for the best Chilean wines from Waitrose, Majestic and Tesco and Field and Fawcett.
